René Marqués, La carreta

René Marqués published and staged La carreta in 1952. The play follows a rural family from the mountains to a San Juan slum and then to New York, dragging the cart of the title as a figure for moving house and losing ground. It is a play of migration. It is not a census table. The counts of the mid-century movement to the states live in Landfall. This page stays with culture: how a San Juan writer put leaving into three acts that schools still assign.

Marqués wrote in Spanish, with jíbaro speech in the first act and a harder urban tongue afterward. The cart is already outdated when the family starts moving. That is the point. An agrarian world ends on stage while the city and the North promise wages that do not quite pay in dignity. The play can be read as conservative, even as a lament for a lost rural order. It can also be read as a record of pressure: land, housing, and the pull of New York. Both readings are about culture, not about how many people boarded a plane in a given year.

San Juan is the place of this row because the play's medium is the capital, and because Marqués's career was of that city: theater, essays, and a long argument with the Estado Libre Asociado's official optimism. He is not Hostos, not Burgos, not a Nuyorican poet. He is a mid-century insular playwright watching the cart leave. This journal's Nuyorican essay begins where his third act points and then refuses to recount the same departure as a number.

If you only remember the cart, also remember who does not ride in it in the poster sense: Black coastal life and Taíno persistence barely enter Marqués's emblem. Use the play as a document of an official feeling about leaving. Then read the Loíza and Caguana pages so that the island the family leaves is not a blank green interior. La carreta is a 1952 fact of stage. The people who stayed, and the people already living in New York, wrote other scripts. A classroom that stops at the third act as "the migration" has turned a play into a table.
