Attack in Washington, November 1, 1950

On November 1, 1950 Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola attacked Blair House in Washington. President Truman was living there while the White House was under renovation. White House Police officer Leslie Coffelt died. Torresola died. Collazo was wounded, tried, and sentenced; his death sentence was later commuted. The date is November 1, the day after Jayuya and Utuado. It is not November 4. This board will not invent a November 4 event.

The attack was a Nationalist action aimed at the president of the United States, in the capital, during the same week as the uprising on the island. That is why it sits here as its own lesson. A merged paragraph that says 'the 1950 revolt' hides the geography. One day the Cordillera. The next day the neighbor on Pennsylvania Avenue. Two men, pistols, a doorway, a dead officer. The Truman Library and the Park Service keep the public chronology.

Collazo survived. He became, for some, a political prisoner and, for others, an assassin who failed. This journal does not need to choose a hymn. It needs the rubric. Attempted assassination of a sitting president by two Nationalists from Puerto Rico, November 1, 1950, Blair House. Coffelt is part of the rubric. Erasing him to purify a story is as dishonest as erasing the island's dead at Ponce.

Spanish speakers usually say Atentado de Blair House, the Blair House attack. Atentado means an attack or an assassination attempt. The English public record says attempted assassination. Both point to the same doorway. Truman was not hit. The officer was. Congress and the island government treated the week as proof of a Nationalist war. The constitutional process of Public Law 600 did not stop for long.

Honesty: November 1, 1950, not November 4. Collazo, Torresola, Coffelt. Jayuya is yesterday's lesson, not the setting of this one. If you were told the attack in Washington fell on the fourth, you were told wrong. The documented attack is the first. This site will not move a death to square a report.

The numbered finding stays with the public law, the rubric, or the tally. This lesson invents no percentage, no count of people, and no date that the sources of this page do not support. English terms are glossed in the text so that the statute can be read without a manifesto.
