The Mayagüez plant starts: 123.3 million and 60,000 families

On June 4, 2026, in Mayagüez, Governor Jenniffer González Colón and the chief executive of the Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados, engineer Luis Reinaldo González Delgado, begin the modernization of the Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The investment La Fortaleza publishes is 123.3 million dollars. The release says more than 60,000 families in the west will benefit. The plant serves Mayagüez, Cabo Rojo, Hormigueros, and Añasco.

Jenniffer González Colón cites 1,266 direct jobs and about 7.6 million dollars in excise and patents for the Municipality of Mayagüez. The scope includes rehabilitation of inlet channels, new solids-removal equipment, four circular clarifiers, solids pumping stations, sludge handling, biological systems, aeration, and controls. Financing is a mix of FEMA, CDBG-DR — funds the release attributes to the governor's work when she was in Congress — and AAA. Completion is projected for July 2028. The plant, from around 1977, has received five NACWA awards and is, La Fortaleza says, the only one that produces compost.

AAA's Capital Improvements Program, on that same page, drives over 3,400 million dollars in projects at various stages. That magnitude is La Fortaleza's, not an inventory assembled here.
