Taíno write-ins in the census

The 2020 Census asked people in Puerto Rico, as in the fifty states, to mark a race and write in a tribe or origin. The Detailed Demographic and Housing Characteristics File A, released in 2023, is the table that carries those detailed groups: hundreds of ethnic origins and U.S. and Alaska Native nations, including Taínos. The Census Bureau's own training materials use Taínos in Puerto Rico as a worked example of a Detailed DHC-A query. That fact matters. The form no longer pretends the category cannot exist.

This diary prints no island-wide total of Taíno write-ins. The DHC-A tables live behind data.census.gov and an API that now requires a key. We did not have the island table at hand on the day of the freeze. Secondary claims circulating a round number do not substitute for the file. When the table is not open, the honest line is: no count is printed here. Persistence is not a count we refused to look for; it is a people the form finally named.

The write-ins are not a tribal registry. They are a questionnaire response. A person in Loíza, Utuado, or Orlando can mark American Indian and write Taíno; another person with the same family history can mark Two or More Races, or Some Other Race, or leave the tribal line blank. The 2020 racial recoding on this island — White alone falling from about three quarters to about a sixth — is a separate essay. It is a change in how the boxes were used, not a biological fact, and it is not the same thing as a Taíno write-in.

The older census story, told alongside, is the paper disappearance of the indios around 1800. That disappearance was administrative. The Taíno people did not become extinct. The DHC-A is a late and limited path by which the federal count admits they are still in the room. Until we can cite the island table itself, we cite the existence of the file and stop. A coded group without a printed total is still a coded group. That is the whole finding of this row.
