La Fortaleza: the UIA strike vote must not cut the water
On August 23, 2026, El Nuevo Día reports that Jenniffer González Colón's government is confident the labor-management escalation at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority will not worsen drinking-water supply, with Carraízo customers on 48-hour rationing and a La Plata breakdown that keeps thousands of customers dry. After the Unión Independiente Auténtica strike vote on Saturday, Public Affairs secretary Jean Peña Payano said this Sunday the government will stay attentive and in dialogue. Here what matters is that people have water, and if they are going to keep the services, good, Jean Peña Payano said at Palacio Rojo. We already made them an offer. They understand that is not the amount. We will keep talking, and we will be monitoring it from La Fortaleza. At Saturday's extraordinary assembly in Arecibo, more than 600 employees represented by the UIA rejected the last wage proposal and approved the strike vote. Primera Hora, on the 22nd, had not put the dollar per hour. El Nuevo Día, on the 23rd, does: the AAA offered 11.74 dollars an hour, 1.24 more against the 10.50 they start collecting. Union members want the base to rise from 10.50 to 12.50, and progressively with other wages. Those three figures are El Nuevo Día's. They are not turned into an annual payroll cost.
On the 22nd, El Vocero covered the third week of rationing, La Plata at 45.35 meters, and more than 24,000 dry customers, with Jean Peña Payano saying almost the same phrase about the offer. On the 22nd, Primera Hora covered the vote without the dollars. On the 23rd, El Nuevo Día puts the scale. Three dispatches. Customer counts are not averaged. On August 11, El Vocero had covered the threat of a 24-hour stoppage. The 22nd is not that stoppage. It is a vote that, according to both weekend notes, requires another assembly before walking out.
El Nuevo Día's piece also places the vote on the same weekend La Plata waits for parts. On the 25th, NotiCel covers the fourth pump back. That repair is not in this note of the 23rd. It is not previewed. What remain are 11.74 against 12.50, more than 600 employees in Arecibo, and Jean Peña Payano's phrase from La Fortaleza.
Anyone looking for the Classification and Compensation Plan or the cost of scale 2 has to go to the AAA, the UIA, and El Nuevo Día. There is no yes of a strike for Monday here. There is Executive confidence and three wage figures. This is not original reporting.
