Job losses are widespread across the labor-market areas
On July 10, 2026, NotiCel reports that total employment in every Labor Market Area except one showed month-to-month decreases, according to the Department of Labor and Human Resources. The only MSA with a positive result was Arecibo, with an increase of 93 jobs comparing April and May. Beyond San Juan, the larger reductions were Ponce, 661 fewer positions; Aguadilla, 534; and Mayagüez, 348. San Juan, by its size, cut 1,453 positions. Lares lost 268 and Santa Isabel 371. Maricao had the worst unemployment rate, 25.2 percent. Guayanilla 11.1, Peñuelas 10.1, Maunabo 13, and Adjuntas 15.3. Also in double digits are Guánica, 14 percent, and Las Marías, 13.4. Culebra had the lowest rate, 1.6 percent, followed by Trujillo Alto 2.4 and Vieques 2.9. Guaynabo 3.0 and Corozal 3.2. In unemployment, May showed a rise in San Juan-Bayamón-Caguas of 1,201 people. The other metropolitan areas increased the estimate between 365 and 88. Against the prior year, Mayagüez MSA fell 283; the others grew between 2,056 and 247. Those magnitudes are DTRH's via NotiCel. This magazine does not re-estimate the MSAs.
On July 1, Sin Comillas covered a manufacturing PMI at 52.4. On July 21, the same outlet reported that employment fell in June for the first time in five months. An April-May MSA map, a May PMI, and a June island-wide drop are three series. They are not averaged. The reader who wants the Labor statement has the NotiCel URL at the foot.
