The Police's new salary scale will show up in the next paycheck

On July 10, 2026, NotiCel reports that the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Orlando C. Rivera Berríos, said the new salary structure for members of the Puerto Rico Police rank system took effect on July 1. "From OGP we already identified the resources needed to cover that increase, so this difference does not represent an impediment to implementing the first phase," he said. The Fiscal Board, according to the outlet, confirmed that the proposal complies with the Public Service Reform methodology and the Uniform Classification and Compensation Plan.

During formulation of the fiscal year 2027 budget, OGP estimated the cost of the first phase at $28 million and incorporated it into the certified budget. Later Police adjustments in payroll and in eligible personnel raised the cost to about $33 million, some $5 million more. Orlando C. Rivera Berríos indicated that the Board flagged the need to identify a source for that difference without affecting the second-phase resources. It is the first review in 10 years of the rank-system scale, he said. Superintendent Joseph González Falcón held that officers will begin to see the adjustments from mid-July. "Starting July 15, our police officers will begin to receive in their payrolls the adjustments corresponding to the new salary scale," he said.

On July 27, Radio Isla covered more than 6,000 officers who denounced that they did not receive the increase and called a protest. On July 30, NotiCel reported that Jenniffer González Colón blamed the Board for the unpaid increases. The July 10 announcement, the July 27 protest, and the July 30 pointing of fingers are three acts. They are not collapsed. The reader who wants OGP's remarks has the NotiCel URL at the foot.
