W. Stephen Muldrow resigns as U.S. Attorney in Puerto Rico

On July 2, 2026, NotiCel reports that W. Stephen Muldrow, head of the federal prosecutors in Puerto Rico for the past seven years, announced his resignation effective Tuesday, July 7. The statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Puerto Rico, according to the outlet, offered no reasons. It mentions the post of head of the office on the island and does not say whether he will return to Tampa, where he came from. It does allude to 37 years of service at the federal Department of Justice.

"It has been the honor of my professional life to serve the people of Puerto Rico and of the United States as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico. My resignation comes after having served the Department of Justice for 37 years," W. Stephen Muldrow said. He added that he owes a debt of gratitude to the attorneys and the professional staff of the office. He arrived on the island as an appointment of President Donald J. Trump in his first term. He remained in the post during the administration of Joseph R. Biden Jr. and, until now, the second term of Donald J. Trump. The statement, NotiCel writes, does not indicate whether the immediate replacement will be by interim appointment or by presidential nomination.

Under his leadership, according to the outlet, the U.S. Attorney's Office carried out the public-corruption operation centered in 2021 on former Cataño mayor Félix Delgado Montalvo and contractor Oscar Javier Santamaría Torres. From the island he supported the prosecution in Washington against former governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and banker Julio Herrera Velutini. In that case, NotiCel recounts internal clashes: W. Stephen Muldrow held firm in going forward even when Herrera Velutini made political donations through his daughter in favor of Donald J. Trump, with the result, according to that coverage, that serious bribery charges became a lesser charge of illegal political contribution and total pardons. That reading is the outlet's. This magazine does not reopen the file.

On the same July 2, NotiCel covered the guilty plea of Luis Jiménez Guzmán, a Hacienda employee, in a $5 million scheme; Stephen Muldrow spoke in that statement as the sitting U.S. Attorney. The resignation and that plea are two notes. Here the fact is the July 2 announcement. The reader who wants the statement has the NotiCel URL at the foot.
