PREPA sues New Fostress Energía for failure to supply liquefied gas

On July 1, 2026, Sin Comillas reports that the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against New Fostress Energía LLC, identified in the note as NFE, for failure to supply liquefied natural gas. The outlet writes the name that way, with that spelling in the headline and in the body. This magazine copies what was published. It does not correct the legal name.

PREPA, according to Sin Comillas, claims $55 million because, facing the lack of LNG, it would have been forced to use diesel, which is more expensive, to operate the power plants. NFE had committed to supplying LNG to the San Juan and Palo Seco plants, according to a contract approved conditionally by the Fiscal Control Board in November 2025 given the lack of competition in the market. That conditional approval and that date are the outlet's. There is no cargo count here, nor a price per million BTU that Sin Comillas did not put down.

The Fiscal Control Board, the same note adds, had required that an agreement be signed with an outside supplier if NFE could not supply LNG, "as had already occurred on other occasions." At that time, Sin Comillas writes, there was already talk of "failed attempts" to identify alternate LNG suppliers. That layer stands. It is not converted into a supplier inventory or a federal-court ruling. The lawsuit has been filed; the outlet does not publish an NFE answer here.

This LNG lawsuit is not the Government Accountability Office report that NotiCel covered on July 3, 2026, on bureaucracy in the electric reconstruction and a critique of funds diverted toward a New Fortress Energy gas pipeline. Nor is it the conditional green light for 11 solar farms, dated that same July 3 in NotiCel. Three energy pieces, three URLs. This note covers the $55 million lawsuit. The reader who wants the federal filing has the Sin Comillas URL at the foot.
