Medical equipment exempted from IVU
On July 14, 2007, Primera Hora reported that Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá signed a bill exempting medical equipment, medical-surgical materials and technology used in health services for some patients from the Sales and Use Tax (IVU), according to La Fortaleza.
The measure amends Law 117 of 2006, which created the IVU, to add to the exempted list those items designed to help people with physical or physiological impairments, the blind, crippled, cardiac, deaf, mute, deaf-mute and amputees. IVU also would not be charged on acquiring equipment for medical treatment that qualifies for full or partial reimbursement under authorized medical insurance in Puerto Rico.
Examples cited include hypodermic needles, chemical compounds for treating or mitigating disease, prostheses, insulin, oxygen and equipment that qualifies for partial or full reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid.
