PRIDCO, 1942

Two years before Operation Manos a la Obra became famous for reshaping Puerto Rico's economy, the government-owned corporation that would in fact drive that transformation was already quietly in motion, doing foundational work with almost no public attention.

The Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company, PRIDCO, is a government-owned corporation authorized to attract private capital to Puerto Rico in order to establish commerce, cooperatives, and industrial operations on the island, a broader mandate than any single project or factory.

Its founding predates the island's better-known mid-century industrialization drive, commonly called Operation Manos a la Obra, which belongs to the next era of Puerto Rican history and is not covered in depth on this site, since this site's scope ends in 1948, two years before the more famous initiatives of that later program began.

PRIDCO's central and continuing function was direct: to provide real estate, factory buildings, and industrial parks, attracting manufacturers willing to set up operations on the island, lowering the barrier to entry for outside businesses that might otherwise have looked elsewhere, and giving the island government a direct hand in shaping its own industrial future.

Its creation reflects a real strategic turn already underway in the early 1940s, away from the traditional plantation economy of sugar, coffee, and tobacco that had defined the island for decades, and toward state-directed industrial development, a turn that would not fully mature until after 1952, well outside this site's timeline.

This account is deliberately narrow. It covers only PRIDCO's founding and declared purpose, the seed of what comes later, not the broader industrialization program that followed a decade later. That broader story, the one most people really mean when they say Operation Manos a la Obra, sits just past the edge of what this site covers, and belongs to the era that follows this one.
