More than 177,000 subscribers without power after failures in Costa Sur and AES

On September 12, 2026, El Vocero reported that the LUMA Energy portal recorded 177,329 customers without electrical service at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. With 21 additional subscribers due to scheduled work, the cited total reaches 177,350 — close to 12.08% of those included in the system.

Bayamón concentrated the largest number, with 48,012 affected, followed by San Juan (43,390), Caguas (25,127), Ponce (22,219), Mayagüez (16,546), Arecibo (16,343) and Carolina (5,692).

Earlier, the Energy czar, Josué Colón Ortiz, had warned of a high probability of nighttime service loss following the shutdown of three units: AES 1 at 9:46 a.m. due to a pipe break associated with the boiler; Costa Sur 5 due to a malfunction in the water injection valve to the boiler; and Costa Sur 6 due to a steam leak in a pipe. Colón linked the Costa Sur shutdowns to failures in LUMA's transmission centers since July 16. The Spokesperson clarifies that this link is a statement by the official and that the client breakdown does not allow determining how many Saturday outages are due to these three units.
