AES 1 and AES 2 go offline and at least 108,000 LUMA customers are left without power
On August 16, 2026, Telemundo Puerto Rico reports that LUMA Energy announced load sheds Sunday night after the sudden outage of AES 1 and AES 2. At least 108,000 customers were left without service at the peak. LUMA repeated, on social media, that there is not enough generation to transmit and distribute according to consumption, and that the generators - Genera, AES, EcoEléctrica - are responsible for generation. That attribution is LUMA's, published by the outlet.
Josué Colón Ortiz detailed AES staff's preliminary diagnosis: unit 2 went offline for vacuum problems in the low-pressure turbine and the condenser; unit 1, for overload on the 13.8 kV auxiliary transformer. Staff completed the start of unit 1 and synchronized it to the system at 9:46 p.m. Once stable, they would begin the start of unit 2. Those hours and those failures are the czar's via Telemundo Puerto Rico. That note has no count of megawatts lost and no operating reserve.
On August 15, El Nuevo Día covered EcoEléctrica and more than 200,000 customers. On the 11th, El Diario PR covered more than 65,000. On the 20th, Metro Puerto Rico covered a LUMA alert for lack of generation, another kernel on this desk. This piece of the 16th covers AES, not EcoEléctrica or the digest of the 11th. Three outages, three URLs, three customer counts. They are not added.
Telemundo Puerto Rico does not publish a region map in the open body; it points to a link of regions without power. This magazine does not invent that map. What remains is the 108,000 peak, the two units, and 9:46 p.m.
Anyone looking for Josué Colón Ortiz's full bulletin has the URL at the foot. This is not original reporting.
