Education will reduce security officers and maintenance because of the budget gap
On July 30, 2026, Radio Isla reports that the Department of Education confirmed that this school year's budget will force a reduction of security officers and maintenance staff at campuses, and could limit each school's purchasing money. Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés says the cuts are part of a gradual post-pandemic reduction, now deepened. The contract has not been canceled, he stated, but the budget gap has implications and he has to make decisions. Transporters and therapists are a service the system is obliged to give. In other lines he needs adjustments. Each school will have fewer hours and fewer security officers this year.
The Department operates this fiscal year with $4,000 million, a reduction of approximately $1,400 million against $5,400 million of the prior fiscal year, which has forced adjustments in security, maintenance, and other services. Those three figures come from Radio Isla. This magazine does not turn them into a count of posts cut or a number of schools.
On July 3, Radio Isla covered the dismissal of about 1,200 janitors. On the 24th, APPSSRE denounced nonpayment of Provisional Remedy. On the 27th, OGP spoke of $200 million disbursed. On the 31st, Eliezer Ramos Parés will present to the Board $12.6 million of special-education debt. Four threads of the same agency. This one covers security and maintenance, not the therapies. They are not collapsed.
Eliezer Ramos Parés speaks; the Board does not answer in this piece. Jenniffer González Colón does not appear. The 4,000 and the 5,400 are not used to verify the 2027 consolidated budget the Board essayed on July 17. Education's fiscal year and a reserves essay are two documents.
