Employment falls in June for the first time in five months
On July 21, 2026, Sin Comillas publishes that employment fell 0.2 percent in June, according to seasonally adjusted data from the Department of Labor and Human Resources Nonfarm Payroll Survey. The loss is 2,100 jobs. It is observed in every sector except educational and health services and leisure and hospitality. The adjusted unemployment rate rises to 5.8 percent, above the 5.6 percent of June last year, according to revised data.
In the private sector 2,200 jobs were created, a 0.3 percent increase against June last year. The outlet notes that private employment had been growing since the pandemic, slowed for a year and a half, and in the last two months the increase accelerated. Public employment, by contrast, remains weak: in June government lost 4,300 jobs, 2.2 percent less than the same month of the prior year. The drop concentrated in state government (3,900) and federal (1,000); municipalities added 600. Public employment totals 22 consecutive months of declines.
The increases concentrated in Leisure and Hospitality (4,800), Educational and Health Services (2,800), and Finance (400). Professional and Business Services fell (3,500), Information (700), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (700), Construction (400), and Manufacturing (200). In 2025 the economy lost 3,600 jobs, 0.4 percent less, against 1.0 percent growth in 2024. The private sector generated an average of 1,800 jobs in 2025, well below the 8,900 of 2024.
On July 17, Sin Comillas had published the sixth monthly contraction of Ángel Rivera Montañez's coincident index. On July 10, NotiCel covered widespread job losses. They are three releases. This one covers the June survey. It is not used to contradict the labor-force participation figure that other notes, in August, will attribute to La Fortaleza.
Sin Comillas does not turn the 2,100 into a count of Education layoffs, nor the 4,300 public jobs into the dismissal of 1,200 janitors that Radio Isla covered on July 3. A payroll survey and a contract cut are two genres. The reader who wants the DTRH tables has the URL at the foot.
