Education distributes federal Title I allocations for academic reinforcement
The Puerto Rico Department of Education (DEPR) began distributing tens of millions of dollars from the U.S. Department of Education's federal Title I program, meant to reinforce pedagogical services at hundreds of public elementary, middle, and high schools in communities of high socioeconomic vulnerability.
The federal allocations are directed at hiring tutor teachers for extended-hours programs, acquiring interactive digital-learning platforms, stocking school libraries with updated texts, and providing specialized teaching materials. Those tools seek to combat the academic lag accumulated after the impact of the hurricanes, earthquakes in the southwest, and the periods of remote instruction.
DEPR's administration operates under the strict oversight of the independent Third-Party Fiduciary Agent required by the federal government in Washington to validate each disbursement and purchase order. Leaders of the Asociación de Maestros de Puerto Rico and the Federación de Maestros have demanded that the resources reach the classroom directly, without bureaucratic obstacles that delay the delivery of materials to public-system students.
