San Juan Cruise Port and Puertos begin a dredging and pier-modernization phase
Puerto Rico Ports Authority executive director Norberto Negrón and directors of the concessionaire San Juan Cruise Port, a Global Ports Holding subsidiary led by Federico González-Denton, announced the formal start of maritime dredging and modernization works at the San Juan Bay piers.
The port-infrastructure project contemplates dredging to greater depth of the navigation channels in front of piers 1, 3, and 4 of Old San Juan, as well as rehabilitation of the Pan American piers in Isla Grande. The works will allow the world's largest cruise ships, known as Oasis and Icon class, which carry more than 7,000 passengers and crew per voyage, to dock simultaneously.
Executive director Norberto Negrón noted that the private investment, coordinated with the Public-Private Partnerships Authority (AAPP) led by Fermín Fontanés Gómez, will revitalize the capital's tourist economy, generating a million-dollar spillover in restaurants, artisans, museums, taxi drivers, and retail shops of the historic core and adjacent areas of Miramar and Condado.
