“Ghost” nonprofits identified with legislative funds

On June 16, 2021, El Nuevo Día reported, by Javier Colón Dávila, that the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Juan Zaragoza, revealed that in evaluating the roughly 600 annual petitions from nonprofits seeking legislative donations, several organizations were identified that do not exist, even though they received funds from the Legislature in the fiscal year then underway.

According to the primary’s kicker, Zaragoza said those entities could be referred to the authorities. The coverage labels the theme as legislative funds to “ghost” nonprofits.

This desk does not invent total donation amounts, the names of the entities, or the outcome of any referral: the rest of the body sits behind a subscription paywall on the cited primary (THIN — paywall).

Identifying a ghost entity is not, by itself, a conviction. Referring to authorities is not an adjudicated charging document.
