The landing at Guánica, July 25, 1898

On July 25, 1898 Major General Nelson A. Miles landed at Guánica. The south and the west had always been the island's leaky side: smuggling bays, sugar roads, fewer stone curtains. Miles used that geography. San Juan's forts still faced the Atlantic. He stepped onto another map. The army's medical history of the campaign, a public official page, dates the landing and the short war that followed: the fighting ended with the August armistice. This board will not invent a field death list for Miles's force. The official pages do not agree the way campaign histories do, and casualty figures stay out of the fixed set.

The choice of Guánica was an insult to El Morro and a compliment at once. One does not land under those batteries if one has a harbor down the coast and a road to Ponce. Ponce, the liberal sugar city, was the political prize of the south. Take it and the capital is isolated by land. Spanish troops under Governor Macías still held San Juan. They did not hold a monopoly on the island's roads.

Some towns received the Americans as a change of masters they had not chosen but might negotiate with. Some did not. This is not a liberation parade. The Autonomy Charter had already named Puerto Ricans as Spaniards with an insular parliament. Miles arrived as another general, not as a notary of that charter. The later treaty would cede, not ratify.

Guánica is a fishing-and-sugar place, not a fortress. The fame of the landing is out of scale with the masonry. That is the point. 1898 was decided by steam navies and columns on land, not by hornworks. The board puts the southern coast on the same stick as El Morro so the contrast stays visible.

From July 25 the Spanish centuries are in their last weeks. October will empty the Intendencia. December will sign the cession. The landing is the boot on the road, not the paper. The paper comes at the end.
