The Cordillera as a climate wall

The Cordillera Central is a climate wall. The humid trade winds from the east and northeast rise, cool, and rain out over the windward slopes and the El Yunque massif. The air that descends on the south side arrives drier. Ponce and the Guayama-Salinas belt live in that rain shadow. The wall is why coffee and rainforest sit a short drive from cactus and irrigation canals. That is orography, not a mystery of character.

Windward: the wet side against the wind. Leeward: the drier side with the wind. In Spanish these are also barlovento and sotavento.

Hurricanes ignore the wall only in the sense that an eye can cross it. The rain does not ignore it. A storm with southerly flow, Fiona as the recent textbook case, wrings out on the south-facing slopes and pours over towns that usually count every millimeter. A storm fed moisture from the north soaks the north. The same mountains that make a dry south can, on the wrong track, flood it.

This page has no weekly drought widget and no imported continental color ramp. Those tools exist elsewhere. Here the claim is the island's own topography as a climate instrument, the kind of thing a San Juan forecast discussion already knows when it talks about slope rain.

Agriculture mapped itself onto the wall long before radiosondes. Cane on the irrigated south, coffee in the humid interior, cattle where neither paid. When the mills died and the plants arrived, the wall stayed. Housing afterward climbed slopes that rivers use in a flood. The wall does not run PREPA, but landslides after extreme rain still cut the grid's mountain lines.

The south coast drought is the rehearsal of the dry agricultural belt. This record is the mountain that makes the belt.

Look at a rainfall map after a hurricane, then at an annual average. The shapes rhyme because the mountains do not move. Politics moves around them. The wall is the only landform on this site allowed to be permanent.
