The Puerto Rican Day Parade
The first New York Puerto Rican Day Parade was founded by Tony Méndez and was held on Sunday, April 13, 1958, in El Barrio, the East Harlem neighborhood that had become one of the community's central gathering points during the Great Migration. Víctor López served as its first president, and José Caballero handled the coordination that turned the idea into a real event on the streets of Manhattan.
Prominent Puerto Rican figures attended that inaugural parade, and it was led by none other than the sitting governor of Puerto Rico, Luis Muñoz Marín himself, who traveled to New York to march alongside the community that his own island's Great Migration had helped to populate. It was a striking gesture from a head of government, one that treated the migrant community not as people who had left, but as an extension of Puerto Rico deserving the same official recognition as anyone still on the island.
Méndez was already a notable figure in New York politics before the parade existed. In 1954 he had become the first island-born Puerto Rican to serve as district leader of a major political party in the city, representing the 14th Assembly District of the Democratic Party, which covered East Harlem itself. Founding the parade four years later was, in a sense, a continuation of the same project: building a visible Puerto Rican political and cultural place in a city that did not always grant it easily.
The parade was organized explicitly as a show of Puerto Rican pride amid the discrimination that migrants faced in that very period, the hostility documented in another lesson on this site through the Great Migration's own record. The tradition has not stopped since, spreading over the following decades to cities including Chicago and Orlando. By 1960, U.S. Census figures showed well over 600,000 New Yorkers of Puerto Rican birth or parentage, the community the parade was built to represent, and still represents, every year it returns to the same streets.
