NotiUno: Esencia collides with water supply — Senate
On August 28, 2026, NotiUno (Luis José Moura Piñeiro) reported that Esencia’s water viability came under strong Senate challenge. Beatriz Llenín Figueroa, of Coalición Defiende a Cabo Rojo, asked whether there is water “without compromising… communities, the local economy, agriculture and southwest ecosystems” and answered no: southwest scarcity is a “physical and historical reality.”
AAA confirmed its infrastructure does not meet estimated demand — more than one million 250 thousand gallons per day. PREPA said Valle de Lajas irrigation runs at maximum capacity and cannot back up the project. Tourism said it would not support a development without sufficient water.
Sen. Juan Oscar Morales asked whether the Coalition would keep opposing if social-interest housing were mixed with luxury; the report also carries the charge that OGPe approved the location consultation without public hearings despite more than 1,000 citizen requests. Radio report ≠ litigation; consultation approval ≠ construction authorized. Primary: NotiUno 2026-08-28 (waiver).
