More than 314 thousand customers left without power after cuts at Aguirre and EcoEléctrica
On July 28, 2026, NotiCel reports that more than 314 thousand customers remained without service Tuesday night after events at Aguirre and EcoEléctrica. Energy czar Josué Colón Ortiz says that around 7:17 p.m. Aguirre Unit 2 began a load reduction because of a fault in the condenser vacuum system. It was generating about 100 megawatts and then reduced its production by approximately 120 MW because of problems with vacuum pump number 2.
Around 7:27 p.m., frequency fell to about 59.4 Hz, which activated the underfrequency protection scheme and automatic shedding to protect the system's integrity. Added to that, around 8:25 p.m., was a chain of events that caused the three EcoEléctrica units to trip. The company is investigating the cause and working on a gradual start-up. LUMA implemented interruptions to stabilize the grid. GeneraPR says its crews remain at Aguirre 2 and that reconnecting customers is LUMA's.
The 314 thousand surpass the 254 thousand of July 22 and the 133 thousand of the 21st. Each peak stays on its date. On the 22nd, EcoEléctrica 1 had gone offline at 11:23 a.m. On the 29th, NotiCel will cover that CT#2 synchronizes at 8:10 a.m. and that CT#1 and Aguirre 2 returned in the early hours. A vacuum trip, an underfrequency, and a return are three steps. Here it covers the night of the 314 thousand.
It is also not mixed with the Board's pause on permanent-generation RFPs of July 23. An operational outage and a paused contracting are two tables. Josué Colón Ortiz speaks; LUMA and Genera appear with distinct functions: distribution versus generation.
NotiCel does not publish a map of municipalities. The hours, the 59.4 Hz, and the 314 thousand stand. The reader who wants the czar's report has the URL at the foot.
