Jenniffer González Colón says LUMA Energy is causing chaos and hysteria
On July 8, 2026, NotiCel reports that Governor Jenniffer González Colón criticized LUMA Energy's warnings about the need to activate load shedding because of generation shortfalls on Monday night. The Government and LUMA executives, the outlet recalls, have been in legal battles since she filed lawsuits for the local courts to declare the extension contract void. "There was no load shedding and I think it is all a LUMA strategy in its counterclaim against the Government to create chaos, hysteria, and part of a strategy to create controversies with the government," she said at La Fortaleza.
Jenniffer González Colón said the company uses propaganda to divert attention, that it has "a lot of people paid in the media," and that it spends the people's money with its bill. Last summer, according to her account, service was supposed to go out for months, but more than 1,600 megawatts of generation were added. "We have more than 3,000 megawatts of consumption," she said. Energy czar Josué Colón Ortiz added that GeneraPR kept the system with the required generation: Aguirre 2 came online at 12 noon and, with that capacity, demand estimates indicated there would be no interruption. He put the system's capacity at 3,500 megawatts and the reserve at 1,300. He said the Aguirre unit that was offline came off in a coordinated way and that LUMA knew it.
LUMA answered, according to NotiCel, that there was not enough energy. On Monday morning there was a generation deficit of more than 250 megawatts after Costa Sur Unit 6 went offline, which caused a shedding on Sunday at 9:27 p.m. and left more than 100,000 customers without service. At 4:00 p.m. Monday, LUMA said, there were still shortfalls; it was not until after 5:00 p.m. that the units repaired by Genera PR presented sufficient availability. Three spokespeople, three layers. The 3,000, the 3,500, and the 250 are not averaged.
On July 6, NotiCel covered LUMA's notice of a "high probability" of outages with Costa Sur 6 and Aguirre 1 and 2 offline. That notice and this press conference are two acts. On July 15, Metro reported that the Government is seeking to discard LUMA's claims in the contract lawsuit. That motion is later.
