Bankruptcies rise 8.1 percent in June

On July 7, 2026, Sin Comillas reports that in June 550 bankruptcy cases were filed, 8.1 percent more than in the same month last year, according to data from Boletín de Puerto Rico. Luisa García Pelatti bylines the note. It is the month with the most activity since March and the largest number of bankruptcies for a June since 2019. "June reverses the downward trend observed in April and May," the publication highlights.

In the first six months of the year 3,059 bankruptcies have been filed, a 1.6 percent increase against the same period of the previous year. Boletín de Puerto Rico forecasts that the year could close with 6,118 cases, a record that would surpass the 5,939 of 2025. That projection is the bulletin's, not a close. In June, 49 businesses filed for bankruptcy, 22.5 percent more, with $15.4 million in debt. Between January and June 253 commercial bankruptcies have been filed, the highest level since 2017. The main businesses in difficulty, according to the report, are restaurants, construction firms, and medical offices. There are 145 businesses that have filed bankruptcy more than once since 2017; three have filed four times and 15 have filed three. The most common pattern, the bulletin writes, is successive Chapter 13 refilings, or converting from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 after a failed reorganization. In 2025 the total was 5,939, the highest figure since 2019, 4.0 percent more than in 2024, when bankruptcies had grown 28.8 percent.

This bankruptcy series is not used to contradict the May manufacturing PMI of 52.4 that Sin Comillas covered on July 1, nor the IAE of six months of contraction of July 17. Three indicators, three dates. On July 21, the same outlet reported that employment fell in June for the first time in five months. Employment is also not averaged with bankruptcies.
