FEMA approves funds to modernize AAA filtration plants

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency (COR3), led by its executive director Manuel Laboy Rivera, formalized the obligation of a substantial federal funding line for the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA), chaired by its executive president Doriel Pagán Crespo. The investment will finance capital rehabilitation works at filtration plants and pumping stations island-wide.

The authorized projects cover structural improvements at the raw-water intakes of the Carraízo and La Plata reservoirs, renovation of sedimentation and flocculation tanks, and the mandatory installation of high-capacity emergency generation systems. Those generators will allow continuous operation of the potabilization plants during the frequent blackouts on the electric grid managed by LUMA Energy.

AAA executive president Doriel Pagán Crespo noted that modernizing these facilities will optimize turbidity and water treatment in periods of drought or of intense torrential rains. For his part, COR3 executive director Manuel Laboy Rivera reiterated that the public corporation has the backing of the Working Capital Advance program to advance funds to contractors and speed the works for the public's benefit.
