The government disburses the Christmas bonus and the Fiscal Plan adjustment payment to public employees

Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, together with Department of Hacienda acting secretary Nelson J. Pantoja, announced the general disbursement of the Christmas bonus to more than 100,000 public servants in central-government agencies, public corporations, and education and public-safety dependencies.

Complementary to the traditional bonus fixed by law at $1,000, the government transferred a special incentive payment for meeting financial targets to eligible employees under the provisions of the Fiscal Plan certified under Title III of PROMESA. This supplemental disbursement, approved by Robert F. Mujica Jr.'s Fiscal Oversight Board, recognized the operating surpluses accumulated in the Treasury Single Account.

Acting secretary Nelson J. Pantoja explained that the direct transfers to workers' bank accounts injected tens of millions of dollars into the local economy during the Christmas season, dynamizing retail trade and services in the 78 municipalities. Public-union leaders reiterated that the bonuses do not replace the need to implement fair wage scales that compensate for the cost of living.
