The Instituto de Estadísticas publishes the balance of payments with a rise in visitor tourist spending

The Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics (IEPR), under the direction of its executive director Orville M. Disdier Flores, published the official report of Puerto Rico's Balance of Payments corresponding to the most recent fiscal year, compiling the commercial and capital flows between the island and the rest of the world.

The statistical document highlighted significant growth in services-account income, driven primarily by nonresident visitors' spending on air transport, lodgings, restaurants, and recreational activities in destinations such as San Juan, Ponce, and the east. This tourist expansion helped mitigate the slowdown recorded in certain branches of manufactured-goods exports.

Executive director Orville M. Disdier Flores explained that the timely publication of these data allows economists, investors, and public-policy makers to understand with exactness the dynamics of federal transfers, foreign-direct-investment flows, and family remittances. The report reaffirms the strategic importance of diversifying the country's sources of economic activity.
