Retail trade records a year-over-year increase driven by food and school sales
The Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), under the leadership of secretary Manuel Ríos Pierluisi, published the retail-sales report corresponding to July, reporting a moderate year-over-year increase in the total billing of Puerto Rico's commercial sector.
The statistical report reflected that commercial dynamism was led by supermarkets, colmados, chain and independent pharmacies, and department stores. Consumption was stimulated by the recurrent flow of Nutritional Assistance Program (PAN) funds, private-sector payroll transfers, and early purchases of uniforms and school supplies for the new academic year.
Representatives of the Retail Trade Association (ACDET) and the Chamber of Food Marketing, Industry and Distribution (MIDA) valued the figures positively, though they warned that merchants continue to face high maritime-freight costs, commercial-insurance premiums, and elevated electric rates. Secretary Manuel Ríos Pierluisi reiterated the DDEC's commitment to fostering incentives for the digitization and efficiency of local retail trade.
