Strike ends without major incidents
On October 15, 2009, El Nuevo Día reported that the national strike called by dozens of labor, social, professional and community organizations brought together tens of thousands of demonstrators rejecting public-employee layoffs and Fiscal Emergency Law 7.
Thousands gathered at Plaza Las Américas. The paper said the strike ended without major incidents and that only minor clashes between Police and university students were reported.
The mobilization falls in the first year of the Fortuño administration and the controversy over the fiscal stabilization plan and central-government layoffs. Reported strike and turnout ≠ official measure of economic impact nor repeal of Law 7. Primary: El Nuevo Día 2009-10-15 (archive; short body).
