South coast drought

The south coast is the island's dry belt because the Cordillera takes the trade winds first. Mean rainfall in Ponce is not mean rainfall in El Yunque. Sugar lived here on irrigation as much as rain, canals cutting the floodplain, wells in the south coast aquifer. When the mills shut down, the dryness stayed, and so did the need to time plantings to a smaller, more anxious water budget. 1915 in some old books, 2015 in this timeline: the belt is a permanent fact, not a single bad year.

Rain shadow and agriculture. Not a continental drought-monitor product nor a weekly state board.

A dry year on the south coast is a growing year first. Plantain, some cane that remains, vegetables, pasture. Farmers speak in weeks without rain, not in map categories borrowed from a continental product. The reservoirs and river diversions built for south coast irrigation show their age in those weeks. A wet hurricane then floods the same fields because dry soil and steep tributaries make a bad pair.

Climate-change arguments about a drier Caribbean south coast are research, not a widget. This essay will not print a borrowed drought category to look scientific. It will say: the wall makes a belt; the belt grows food with extra water; the extra water is politics when the north floods and the south cracks. Fiona's rain was an anomaly in that belt, not a cancellation of it.

The south coast here is a place with names — Ponce, Juana Díaz, Santa Isabel, Salinas, Guayama — used as a belt, not as a scoreboard of invented municipal drought stats. A weekly colored board would fake a precision this essay does not have.

If a number is not in the San Juan climate discussion, it is not on this page.

Walk the south at noon in March and the argument is tactile. Walk it after a southern hurricane and the same dust is mud. Both walks are the dry belt. Agriculture after Bootstrap shrank the labor; it did not irrigate the plain. The climate wall still deals the hand.
