美陆军工兵团批准清理Carraízo淤泥;约增容5000万加仑
On September 5, 2026, NotiCel (Cybernews) reported that Governor Jenniffer González Colón and DNER Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) authorized a sediment-removal project at the Carraízo reservoir. Permit ≠ completed work; authorization ≠ capacity already recovered.
The permit covers work in barrio Jaguas, highway PR-941 km 10.3, municipality of Gurabo, for five years through March 15, 2031. In written remarks the governor said it is the first permit of its kind in more than 32 years and that the work would add roughly 50 million gallons of reservoir capacity. On Thursday, USACE project manager Luis O. Betancourt sent a letter to the DNER secretary authorizing removal of about 285,000 cubic yards of sediment over 7.12 acres of exposed area.
Quiles contrasted timelines: the 1994 removal took more than six months to permit; this time, he said, it issued in under a week. NotiCel notes Carraízo was built in 1953, with a 40.95-meter capacity mark and about 665 acres. Sediment removal, per the story, clears debris, vegetation, waste and mud on banks — often done when levels are low, as in drought.
The governor framed the drought as a chance to strengthen Carraízo and cited an earlier deep dredging under this administration that, she said, finished in March 2026 and helped delay scheduled interruptions that “remain paused for now.” Pause of interruptions ≠ end of drought; removal permit ≠ dredging completed.
